Telcos see marginal losses in subscriptions amid SIM re-registration

At the end of October 2021, the total number of voice subscriptions had reduced by a marginal 1.27% from about 42.1 million to about 41.6 million, which is a reflection of the decreases in figures recorded by all four telcos over the period.

Against a population of 30,792,608, the figure represents a voice penetration rate of 134.97% for the period under review.

Ghana started SIM re-registration with the Ghana Card from October this year and this widespread marginal decreases are happening amid the exercise.

Per the report from the NCA, MTN’s voice subscriptions for the period was 23.6 million, representing some 0.08% dip from September, the month before SIM re-registration started. MTN’s market share for the month under review was 57.22%.

Vodafone’s mobile voice subscriptions also decreased by a relatively significant 4.39%, from 9.55 million to about 9.14 million, leaving it with a market share of 22.15%, while AirtelTigo’s also lost some 1.05% of its subscriptions and finished the month with 7.64 million subscribers, representing a market share of 18.52%.

Meanwhile, the abiding industry trailer, Glo also saw a drop in subscriptions from 871,058 in September to 885,359 in October, which is a 1.62% decrease, it gained market share and finished with 2.11%.

On the mobile data market, the total number of subscriptions was 23.4 million representing a data penetration of 76%.

Again, MTN remained the leader with 15.85 million data subscribers being 68.14% of the total, while AirtelTigo came second with 3.71 million data subscribers, representing some 15.94% market share and while Vodafone is third with about 3.32 million data subscriptions, being 14.26% market share.

Glo recorded data subscriber figures of 385,961 at the end of October 2021. This
reflects a market share of 1.66%.

On the fixed fix data market, Vodafone remained the overwhelming market leaders with 65,858 customers out of the total of 93,210. MTN was next with 26,686 and AirtelTigo is trailing with just 666 fixed broadband customers, in spite of its claim to have the biggest network capacity in Ghana right now.

BWAs 
The four Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Operators also held their own in the market commanding some 52,191 customers between them.

Surfline maintained its overwhelming lead with 42,035 customers, followed by Busy Ghana with 6,055; Telesol with 3,045 and Broadband Home with 1,056 in that order.

Meanwhile, with regards to fixed voice subscription, there were 317,069 of them in total, out of which Vodafone alone had 309,177; MTN – 4,337 and AirtelTigo – 3,555.
