Opera, in partnership with Celo and Mento Labs, is thrilled to announce a significant milestone: surpassing 1 million users of the MiniPay wallet in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. This achievement will be celebrated at the Africa Money and DeFi Summit, scheduled for February 14-15 in Nairobi, Kenya.

MiniPay is a dollar stablecoin wallet integrated seamlessly into the Opera Mini browser for Android devices, leveraging the Celo blockchain. It enables users to securely store, send, and receive funds instantly on their mobile phones with minimal transaction fees. With a vision to onboard millions of users to Web3 across Africa, Celo and Mento Labs are dedicated to providing accessible financial solutions through MiniPay, embedded within Opera Mini.

MiniPay’s Mission and Solutions

MiniPay is dedicated to leveraging decentralized finance (DeFi) to deliver accessible financial solutions and engage millions of African users with Web3. Through its integration with the Opera Mini browser, MiniPay facilitates swift, convenient, and cost-effective payments via its stablecoin wallet. Utilizing the Celo network, MiniPay offers transactions with sub-cent fees. Presently operational in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, MiniPay is poised for further growth, including expansion into South Africa and beyond.

Partnership with Celo and Mento Labs

The collaboration among MiniPay, Celo, and Mento Labs is rooted in a common vision for fostering financial inclusion and stability in Africa. Mento’s decentralized USD stablecoins, integrated into the MiniPay platform, offer several benefits, such as mitigating currency volatility and serving as a reliable store of value. This is particularly vital in regions grappling with hyperinflation and economic uncertainty, where stablecoins provide a decentralized and accessible alternative to traditional financial services.

Charles Hamel, Product Director at MiniPay, highlighted, “The MiniPay wallet is designed to be user-friendly for individuals of all levels of experience, enabling them to harness the advantages of decentralized finance. Through a familiar Web2 interface, MiniPay simplifies acquiring, sending, and receiving Mento cUSD stablecoins across Africa, using just mobile phone numbers.”

“We at the Celo community are delighted to back the advancement of our collective goal: to foster prosperity for all through Opera MiniPay. This collaboration enables real-world users to access a range of inclusive financial tools seamlessly, quickly, and reliably,” said Jason Rodrigues, Head of Founder Programs at the Celo Foundation.

“Mento Labs is enthusiastic about supporting the MiniPay rollout, which aims to offer affordable and accessible financial services to Opera’s African user base. With a focus on speed, reliability, and financial inclusivity, MiniPay provides users with a secure and transparent means to store and send funds using stablecoins easily,” added Markus Franke, CEO at Mento Labs.
